The doctors gave us the news today that they need to perform surgery on Happy to put in a shunt (an internal drain) from his head into his peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity - see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/peritoneum). The shunt normally stays in his body even after he recovers.
Why do they have to do this?
The doctors are concerned that the drain on the top of his head is likely to get infected within the next 5 days. An infection this near the brain would be very hazardous. Therefore, the team of doctors is recommending putting in the shunt.
The Bhatt's agreed to the surgery but we are all concerned. The surgery is not scheduled but will very likely occur mid day on Thursday. The doctors are saying that this will extend his stay in the ICU by several days and will mean that he will be on the breathing machine for a few more days - not what we were hoping and praying for. Remember what the blog posting below titled "Ups and Downs" - this is one of those set backs that the doctors told us is part of the journey. That does not make it any easier though.
Pray that the surgery goes well. Pray for peace for Rajan and Amisha. They are worried.

Hello Rajubhai & Amishabhabhi;
ReplyDeleteMe (Kinjal), Anilkaka, Champaba, Dineshkaka, Induba, Pritiaunty, Rajvi & Shrijal viewed this blog. We all wish Happy get well soon and wish infection do not effect his health any more. Wish for successfull surgery and quick recovery.
This blog is a wonderful thing. I am a volunteer with AFS-GPS (north). I've been following along and have been thinking and praying for Happy's recovery. Much strength goes out to Happy's parents and host-parents. I feel a special connection to Happy. I picked him up at the Seattle airport during his arrival. He was lost and all I was told was to go and find Happy. I found Happy by a pay phone outside the baggage claim area. The look of relief when I walked up to him and asked "are you with AFS?" He was so relieved and excited. We were able to talk during the orientation weekend and I really enjoyed our conversation. I'll be thinking about Happy and all of his support from friends and family.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear that Happy has to have a surgery. It does sound though that given the intensity of Happy's injury, he is progressing well overall. I am impressed by OHSU's doctors and staff. It seems they are providing excellent care.
ReplyDeleteI am amazed and thankful at what they are able to do medically to help patients. I guess that is partly what makes it so frustrating when things don't just automatically get better every day. They are able to do so much it is frustrating when they can't positively control recovery time too.
As a parent, I know there is no way to stop worrying about your child... especially when he is going through surgery. My heart truly goes out to Happy's parents as this experience is probably one of the most difficult things they have ever had endure.
I would like them to know that we are thinking good thoughts for Happy's surgery today and that his overall progression through recovery can go smoothly.
Dear Happy, Rajan and Amisha,
ReplyDeleteI have returned from my trip and hope to see you tomorrow. I'm so excited to hear all the good progress these last few days! You have been in my thoughts and prayers every moment. Sally Ann
